Advanced Systems, Research, and Capstone Analysis
Program Overview
CRYPTO 601 represents the culmination of the MIDAS curriculum, engaging students with frontier technical developments and requiring independent research demonstrating mastery of analytical frameworks developed throughout the program. The course combines advanced technical content with substantial independent work.
The curriculum covers advanced topics including zero-knowledge proof systems, cross-chain interoperability architectures, MEV dynamics, and emerging consensus mechanisms. Students engage directly with current academic research, technical specifications, and implementation documentation rather than secondary summaries.
The capstone project constitutes the primary assessment, requiring students to conduct original analysis applying frameworks from across the curriculum to a substantial research question of their choosing. Projects must demonstrate rigorous methodology, engagement with relevant literature, and analytical contribution beyond summary or description.
Students completing CRYPTO 601 possess demonstrated capability for independent research and analysis meeting academic standards. The program prepares students for research roles, technical leadership positions, and specialized advisory functions requiring deep domain expertise and analytical rigor.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of CRYPTO 601, students will be able to:
- Analyze zero-knowledge proof systems including SNARKs, STARKs, and their applications to scaling and privacy with attention to trust assumptions and verification costs
- Evaluate cross-chain interoperability solutions including bridges, message passing protocols, and shared sequencing with systematic analysis of security models
- Assess MEV dynamics including extraction mechanisms, mitigation strategies, and implications for transaction ordering and protocol design
- Engage critically with current academic research including reading primary literature, evaluating methodological choices, and identifying research gaps
- Conduct independent research meeting academic standards including literature review, methodology specification, and rigorous analysis
- Present complex technical findings clearly for both specialist and informed general audiences
Assessment Structure
Competency is demonstrated through multiple assessment types.
Advanced Topics Examination
Assessment covering advanced technical topics and research methodology. Tests deep understanding of zero-knowledge systems, interoperability architectures, and MEV dynamics. Includes problems requiring formal analysis and evaluation of current research claims. Duration: 150 minutes.
Research Paper
Scholarly paper (5000-7000 words) engaging with current academic literature on a topic approved by faculty. Must include comprehensive literature review, clear research question, appropriate methodology, and original analytical contribution. Held to academic publication standards for argumentation and citation.
Capstone Project
Substantial independent research project (8000-12000 words or equivalent) demonstrating mastery of analytical frameworks from across the curriculum. Must address a significant research question, employ rigorous methodology, and produce defensible conclusions. Includes oral presentation and defense before faculty panel. Exceptional work may receive distinction notation on credential.
Progression
Completion of CRYPTO 501 is required. CRYPTO 601 represents the terminal level of the MIDAS curriculum. Successful completion demonstrates comprehensive mastery across all program areas and capability for independent research. Students should be prepared for substantial independent work and self-directed learning.
